Red Bull New York GK Clinic

On a warm August Sunday morning, 40 goalkeepers between the ages of 9 to 16 years took part in a very special goalkeeping experience.

Preston Burpo, first team goalkeeper coach for the New York Red Bulls, led the preseason event and was supported by three coaches with academy and first team coaching experience.

Players were treated to a two and a half hour clinic which focused on handling and footwork, 1 v1 situations, shot-stopping and distribution, all key components of the position. Players were placed in small age specific groups to allow the coaches to provide specific on one opportunities and coaching points.

“It was great to see so many talented goalkeepers from the local area.,” said Preston Burpo, First Team Goalkeeping coach. “These players worked extremely hard today and it was a fun experience for both players and coaches. We hope to continue these types of clinics in the future.”

After being taken through the clinic the players and parents had the opportunity to ask Preston and the rest of the staff questions relating to the position and player development opportunities. After the clinic, parents and players were able to take pictures and ask specific questions to the coaching staff.

“The goal of the clinic was to provide a unique opportunity for aspiring goalkeepers to learn from a Major League Soccer first team goalkeeper coach as well as the best goalkeeper coaches in the tristate area.” remarked Steve Jones, Regional Manager Training Programs, adding “We hope that this clinic provided motivation for these players to continue their hard work and continue to develop. Hopefully one of these players will become a New York Red Bulls homegrown goalkeeper.”
