On November 12, the New York Red Bulls opened the doors of the Red Bulls Training Facility in Hanover, N.J., to club directors of youth soccer partners for an opportunity to go behind the scenes with Sporting Director Ali Curtis and the New York Red Bulls coaching staff. The event was the first of its kind that offered the youth soccer community a chance to discuss club management, team culture and player development.

The club directors were first welcomed with a presentation by Curtis, focusing on current club and team dynamics in addition to challenges and successes as they launched the 2015 MLS campaign. He touched on key points that define the Red Bulls’ new style of play and the attributes needed from players in each position. Curtis also shared insight on current club operations and development initiatives for 2016 and beyond.

First Team Assistant Coach Chris Armas followed Curtis with a discussion about the team’s training sessions, providing a first-hand account on how they design training and the many details that go into planning and evaluating each session. He also shared why Red Bulls was the perfect fit for him and how Curtis and Head Coach Jesse Marsch have created an ideal environment for coaches, veteran players and youth players breaking into the MLS.

The club directors then joined Marsch and the Red Bulls on the field to observe training. Following a lively session, Marsch addressed the group of directors to share his feedback about training, including the high intensity and focus of the players heading into a tough playoff run.

To close out the event, club directors were taken on a tour of the training facility and debriefed with Head of Scouting Rob Elliot. The Red Bulls aim to host similar events in the future as they continue to open channels between the organization, the soccer community and local youth soccer clubs.
