Questions & Answers

1. What is the check-in procedure?

  • Check-in time is staggered between 12.00pm and 2.00pm on Sunday.
  • We suggest players born in 2003 and later check in between 12:00pm and 1:00pm, and players born in 2002 and earlier check in between 1:00pm and 2:00pm.
  • Check in times are staggered so we can manage the flow of arrivals, maintain as much space as possible in the parking lots, and keep corridors as clear as possible. This will also reduce lines at check in.
  • If you cannot get to your suggested check-in time, you are free to arrive any time between 12:00pm and 2:00pm.
  • When you approach the security gate, report the players name to the security guard. They will verify your access to the facility, and grant entry.
  • Check-in is at the front of G & H dorm. When you enter the facility stay on the main road until you reach parking lot #7, which is the closest lot to this dorm.
  • Players should eat lunch prior to arrival, as the first meal will be at approximately 4:30 p.m. to 5.00 p.m.
  • Please do not arrive prior to 12.00 p.m. as all our staff will be busy making final site preparations and no one will be available to assist you.
  • Once you have dropped off your children, you are free to depart. There is no opening address for parents due to the extended check in period.
  • Parking is limited, so we encourage all parents to depart as soon as possible, following dropping off your child. This will also help them settle into the camp more quickly.
  • If you require a late check in (after 2:00pm), please let us know in your survey response, the link to which is in your confirmation email.

2. How do I choose a room-mate?

  • Rooms at SUNY Maritime typically offer occupancy for either 2 or 4 players.
  • The confirmation email contains an electronic survey, which allows you to request up to three room-mates, in order of preference.
  • Even if you have no room-mate preference, it is important to complete the survey, and indicate this in your response. You will have an opportunity to give more information about your child which will help us pair them up with a similar child.
  • We understand the importance of getting the rooming allocation right, and we appreciate your patience and cooperation on the opening day while we do our best to accommodate everyone’s needs.

3. What should players bring to camp?

  • Soccer equipment: cleats, sneakers, shin-guards, plenty of t-shirts, shorts, rain jackets.
  • If possible, players should wear white shorts and socks to all field sessions. One additional pair of each will be provided to players as part of their welcome pack, but extras should be brought if available. Please note that this is not mandatory, and players need not purchase multiple pairs of additional white shorts and socks if they don’t have them. If white shorts and socks are not available, players may wear whatever they like.
  • Current team uniform (all players will be required to wear their team uniform on the first evening of camp). If you cannot access your team uniform, players may instead wear a replica team uniform of their choice.
  • Goalkeepers should bring gloves and long sleeved goalkeeper shirts.
  • Casual clothing for the evening.
  • Toiletries and towels.
  • Bathing suit.
  • As a rule of thumb, players should generally be able to make one set of soccer clothing work per day. However, please be prepared for up to one full change per day, in case of inclement weather.
  • Players must bring a complete set of bedding, including sheets, comforters and pillows. Beds are twin sized.
  • Players DO NOT need to bring a fan to SUNY Maritime. The new dorms are air conditioned, and very cool.
  • Players DO NOT need to bring a ball, as these are provided to the players.

4. What are the supervision arrangements in the dorms?

  • New York Red Bull coaches are housed on each floor of every dorm.  Their rooms have signs on them should campers need them for any reason.
  • In addition to our staff, each location has their own on campus security which is available 24 hours a day.

5. How can my child contact me/I contact my child throughout the week?

  • If your child has a cell phone they may use it only in their rooms. We do not allow players to carry their phones around campus with them.
  • You will also have the cell phone number of RDS Manager, and an on-site supervisor, who you can contact in an emergency.

6. Are there any medical facilities on site?

  • All members of New York Red Bulls staff have a working knowledge of first aid and how to treat basic sporting injuries.
  • A qualified Athletic Trainer is also present during the week to provide on field treatment.

7. Do the dorms have air conditioning?

Yes, the new dorms at SUNY Maritime have air conditioning, so there is no need to bring a fan.

8. Does SUNY Maritime have a swimming pool?

Yes. An hour each night is allocated for players who wish to swim. This is normally from 9:00pm to 10:00pm each evening, although this is subject to change. Swim time is fully supervised by multiple coaches, and there are also fully qualified lifeguards at each pool location.

9. What non-soccer activities are available throughout the week?

  • Time is allocated each day for players to spend time socializing with other campers, and to spend time engaged in other activities.
  • SUNY Maritime has a large common room, with a television and video games.
  • Team activities will be prepared throughout the week, featuring activities such as quiz nights, Women’s World cup viewing parties, and other team competitions.

10. What if my child has dietary requirements?

  • Every location offers a variety of meal options three times a day.
  • There are vegetarian options available at all meals.
  • We assume that all players are aware of their dietary concerns and know what they can or cannot eat.
  • While at camp, the kitchen staff is used to dealing with school groups, so if your child has any questions they may ask them.
  • Our staff is seated with the campers for all meals so they can monitor the players’ eating habits.
  • Water is available at the fields for all sessions. It is essential that each child brings a water bottle, for refills.
  • We urge you not to provide your child with large amounts of candy and soda for their rooms.

11. What do I do with my child’s medications?

  • All medical information, including medications to be taken at camp, will already have been listed when you filled out on-line registration forms.
  • There are no additional forms you need to complete at this time, unless their health has changed since the time of registration.
  • All medications must be left with the coordinator at check in.   They will personally supervise and administer medications, unless advised otherwise.

12. Are the parents allowed to come and watch during the week?

  • The only time parents may attend to watch sessions, is the morning training session, from 9:00am - 11:30am. No visits are allowed outside these hours.
  • We no longer allow parents to attend the evening sessions, as if we have a young player who is homesick, seeing their parents in the evening (closer to bed-time) exacerbates the problem further.
  • The more you allow your child to immerse themselves in the soccer environment, the more they will enjoy the experience.
  • Although we encourage our players to call home periodically, calling them several times a day is entirely counter-productive. Quite often, a text message is better. Please bear this in mind when communicating with your child.
  • For child protection reasons, when visiting, parents are not allowed to enter the dormitories. If you are bringing extra clothing / equipment for players, please meet them outside the dorms.

13. How much money should my child bring for the week?

  • Approximately $25-$30 (in small bills) for the week should be plenty.
  • Players must keep money in their rooms but are responsible for it themselves. We strongly advise not bringing more money than is necessary.
  • Please do not bring other valuable items to camp as New York Red Bulls are not responsible for the loss of any personal belongings. iPhones / iPads / other portable electronic devices are brought entirely at your own risk.

14. What time do we pick our child up on the Thursday?

  • The final afternoon consists of a tournament, from 2:00pm to 4:00pm. All parents are encouraged to attend to cheer the players on.
  • Tournament play may be held at the turf field.
  • The camp graduation ceremony takes place at 4:00pm and lasts no longer than half an hour. Parents’ attendance for this ceremony is mandatory, unless your child is being picked up by someone else.
  • The graduation ceremony will take place on the turf field, immediately following the tournament.
  • Check out will begin at 4:30pm, upon the completion of the graduation ceremony and tournament, with all families expected to depart no later than 5:30pm.
  • If someone other than yourself will be checking your child out, please ensure your child is aware. Written permission need only be provided if there is a change of plan that your child is not aware of.
  • Please note that due to the adjusted schedule, parental attendance for normal visiting hours (9:00am to 11:30am) is not permitted on the final day. We find that players’ focus is better when parents are not in attendance, so this allows us to conduct a higher quality training session on the final morning.

15. Final note regarding conduct in rooms:

  • We are very fortunate to be located in the new dormitories, which feature air conditioning, and en-suite bathrooms. This will serve to make your child’s experience on camp even more enjoyable than before.
  • These dorms are not yet three years year old, and we are one of the few parties with permission to use them. As such, it is imperative that the dorms are left in immaculate condition.
  • We will be conducting periodic room checks to ensure our players are taking care of their rooms, but it is important that you also educate your child of the importance of respecting the facilities.
  • Any costs for the repair of damaged property (including lost keys and key-cards) will be passed directly onto the families of players deemed responsible for the damage, so please ensure your child is cognizant of this in advance.
