Overview

The Red Bull Training Programs follow a researched and proven approach to player development. The following information introduces each one of our curriculums, operating philosophy and the methods and structure that are used to deliver the session.

Philosophy

Create a fun, challenging learning environment where players have the opportunity to play.

Curriculum Structure

To help meet the varying needs of the youth soccer community, the training programs curriculum is driven by both age and ability. It is very common that players of the same age can be at completely different stages of learning. Having a ‘sliding scale’ curriculum allows players of staggered abilities to develop at their own pace. The following three curriculums levels are offered:

1 Beginner 3 to 6 Non directive activities focusing on fundamentals and ball familiarity.
2 Developmental 7 to 14 Structured activities focusing on basic individual techniques and game awareness.
3 Competitive 7 to 18 Extensive, realistic activities focusing on correct application of technique through tactical understanding

 
Player Development Rationale

The New York Red Bulls operate a systematic process to Player Development. Players follow a path focused on technique and skill development, as competency increase tactical elements are introduced.  The mastery of technique at a young age is vital for a child’s future development. Pre-adolescent players retain an enormous ability to learn new motor skills. However their ability to understand tactical concepts may not develop until adolescents

Coaching Methodology

The training program curriculum is delivered based around five key methods: (1) Specific (2) Progressive (3) Repetitive (4) Competitive (5) Adaptive.

A description of each method is offered in the table below:

With this methodology the role of a coach is to facilitate learning and to effectively recognize and act on important teachable moments.

  • Build into fully opposed – full pressure
  • Lots of small sided activities 1v1, 1v1+1,1v2, 2v2, 2v3

Game Specific Learning
  • 4v4 is preferred structure, the smaller the of players involved the higher the frequency of learning moments
  • Restrictions are used to help emphasis the required learning outcomes.
  • Role of the coach in this phases is more the observer, allow for lots of free play

  • No restrictions/conditions or coach interaction
